Westminster Design Competition (South Asia)

'A collective challenge to transform 100 public spaces'

The University of Westminster International Design Competition was launched in 2012 in collaboration with the National Association of Students of Architecture, India. Since then, the competition has generated an outreach of over 230 architecture colleges in South Asia, challenging young  creative minds through innovative design competition briefs each year.

KULAM, CHENNAI
We have chosen to restore a historic lake, in Panaiyur, ECR. The lake was used by the people of that area for irrigation, drinking water, cooking, etc. The lake is 40 ft. deep and used to be filled with pure water. It has now become a residential waste dump, and cannot be used for any purpose. We have taken the initiative to design the space around the lake to make it an interactive public space.

The site is a civic centre in the heart of the city. The notion of renovating this site serves the alarming need of the area to be cleaned. The girls hostel on JNV University�s campus was ignored and was unkept, littered and overgrown with weed and grass . Students of architecture department along with the hostel girls took an initiative to refurbish the wasted land, by reusing and recycling the available waste.

Our site is a play park named 'Bala Vana' in police lane. The park has been out of use since weeds had grown all over, and play equipment is broken and rusted. We transformed the park with the theme 'Superheroes' and renamed the park as 'Justice Park'.
